Let’s Talk ACT & SAT: What You Need to Know (and Why You Shouldn’t Wait)

Despite summer being in full bloom, we still have to think about college planning and what’s ahead. I know you care deeply about your child’s future, thus I want to gently remind you of something that can sneak up on families: standardized testing.

I get it—there’s so much conflicting information out there right now. Some schools are test-optional. Others are bringing tests back. And everyone seems to have an opinion.

Here’s the truth: tests like the ACT and SAT still matter, and in many cases, they can be the very thing that helps your child stand out or unlock merit aid. But the key is not waiting until the last minute to decide whether or not to take them.

Let’s break it down by grade and give you some clear, calm guidance.

❤️ 9th Grade Families

This is a good time to:

  • Get familiar with the SAT and ACT format.
  • Begin practicing reading comprehension and algebra skills.

❤️ 10th Grade Families

Time to start thinking more intentionally:

  • Take the PSAT 10, if available, to get a sense of baseline strengths.
  • Try a free ACT or SAT diagnostic to see which test suits your teen better.
  • Start lightly preparing, especially in the summer after 10th grade.

❤️ 11th Grade Families

This is the big year for testing:

  • Plan for your child to take the ACT and/or SAT in the fall or spring.
  • Allow enough time to retake the test if needed.
  • Make sure you’re registered on time (dates below!).

❤️ 12th Grade Families

If you haven’t tested yet, or are hoping to raise your score:

  • Use early summer and fall test dates strategically.
  • Get scores in before college deadlines.
  • Make sure you send scores directly to colleges, if required.
