12th Grade Parents – 3 Things You Must Do Now!

For over two decades, I’ve been guiding families through the college admissions maze. I’ve seen it all—from the highs of acceptance letters to the heartbreak of dashed hopes. Today, I want to speak directly to you, parents of high school seniors. Right now, your involvement is crucial, and a few key actions can make all the difference in your child's college journey.

If you’re a 12th-grade parent, I know you’ve put in time, effort, and likely a fair share of stress into this process. But don’t let your foot off the gas just yet. There are three things you must focus on right now to ensure your child’s success and finish strong. Whether you're balancing Early Decision results, prepping for Regular Decision deadlines, or tying up loose ends on financial aid, this is the moment to refocus.

1. Reassess Your Child's College List

You’ve likely built a college list that balances reach, target, and safety schools, right? But here’s my question: Are you confident it’s the right list? Here’s why now is the time to double-check:

  • Early Action Results Impact: If your child has already received Early Action (EA) decisions, this could change the outlook on their college list. Accepted? Fantastic! Waitlisted? Deferred? Now’s the time to reassess the next moves.
  • Rolling Admissions and Financial Fit: Your list should prioritize schools that fit your budget, your child’s academic goals, and their future ambitions. While it’s tempting to cast a wider net, don’t just add schools haphazardly to “see what sticks.” Admissions officers can spot a less-than-genuine applicant, and your child deserves schools where they’re truly a good fit.

Now, some parents come to me feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of options. If you’re feeling the same, you’re not alone! There’s a reason our clients are more successful—they’ve made intentional choices with our guidance. This is your opportunity to ensure your list is finely tuned, and if you’re not sure, our team is here to help.

2. Stay on Top of Deadlines and Requirements

Deadlines—January 1st, January 15th, February 1st—are looming, and missing any of these dates can derail your child’s dreams. By now, they’ve likely submitted several applications, but it’s critical to double-check all components:

  • Confirm Submission Status: Ensure that every application is not just submitted but complete. That means all forms, essays, letters of recommendation, and application fees. Many schools require a Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR), so if your child hasn’t completed it yet, they’re at risk.
  • Financial Aid and Scholarships: While the admissions process might seem daunting enough, securing financial aid adds another layer. Make sure all FAFSA and CSS Profile forms are submitted and don’t miss scholarship deadlines! Money is on the table; don’t let it go unclaimed.
  • Follow Up on Rolling Admissions and Scholarships: If your child applied rolling admissions or early action, stay informed on their application status. Admissions is a waiting game, but our experience shows that a well-timed follow-up can sometimes make a difference.

I tell my clients that deadlines are more than dates on a calendar—they’re golden opportunities. Our team at Strategic Admissions Advice has helped families avoid the stress of last-minute submissions, and we’re here to support you if you need an extra set of eyes on your applications.

3. Don’t Ignore Financial Aid and Testing Documentation

One area where families often slip up is in the documentation required for financial aid and test scores. With college costs soaring, ignoring this aspect can lead to disappointment. Here’s what to focus on:

  • FAFSA and CSS Profile: The FAFSA application opens in October, and many families wait until December to submit. Don’t wait! Submitting these forms early maximizes your child’s chances of receiving aid. Make sure you’re on top of both FAFSA and CSS Profile forms if required by the colleges on your list.
  • SAT/ACT Scores and Scholarships: Many schools still consider SAT or ACT scores for merit-based scholarships. Even if your child opted for test-optional admissions, submitting scores for scholarships may give them an edge. If scores are required, check that they’ve been sent to the appropriate schools.
  • Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR): Many colleges now use SRAR, a system where students self-report grades. Failing to complete it accurately or on time can jeopardize the application. Take the time now to ensure it’s done right, and if you need help, we’ve got your back.

When it comes to documentation, details matter. At Strategic Admissions Advice, we’ve seen parents struggle to keep up with financial aid paperwork and SRAR requirements. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen to you.
